General GEDCOM
GEDCOM files are created by most genealogy programs. Their use is archival of genealogy data, as well as the sharing of genealogical data. Most genealogical programs may import GEDCOM files. Unfortunately, not all GEDCOM are equivalent. Genealogical programs often add non-standard entries that are not in the GEDCOM standard. As such, it may be necesssary to edit a GEDCOM file in order to import it. Currently, all GEDCOM files are plain text that is line oriented.
